A Big Man in a Small Circle

How blinding is the spotlight
That casts my shadow long
Within the many circles
Wherein I may belong.

How transient the glory
Of position or of fame;
How meaningless the tally sheet
Of those who know my name.

But, oh, how soon my heart takes root
And firmly holds it’s ground
When welcomed home by wife and kids
Who quickly gather ’round.

In their love am I fulfilled;
And thus I clearly see
A big man in this circle small
Is all I need to be.
