Contending Desires

We do what we most wish to do
When conscious thought drives action;
How strong we feel ‘bout good or ill
Determines which finds traction.

Tough it is to quench the fire
Of passion felt for vice;
It’s flame so high in vain men try
To put such drives on ice.

Still, there’s hope for good to win
In spite of evil’s powers;
Just fan the burn of the righteous yearn
Until it’s furnace towers.

The brightest blaze wins the day,
As the dominant desire
However strong the want for wrong
Good can be built higher.

Capture virtues, bring them in
To garnish every thought;
When foremost might is love for right
You’ll do the things you ought.
