Could She Be Sixteen So Soon?

Not long ago her hand reached out
And grasped my finger tight;
A toddler stepping toward the world,
Her eyes showed her delight.

Curiosity was her drive,
Exploring house and yard;
From tubes of glue to doggie doo,
She learned some lessons hard!

Not long ago her hand reached out
And grasped the streamered grips
Of her first bike as off she rode
To start a thousand trips

To check out this, to go find that,
To ride to see a friend;
She bravely brushed off nasty spills
That sent her end-for-end.

And now, today, her hand reached out,
Without so much as “Please”,
As if preparing all her life,
She took away my keys!

She sped away…but then, surprise!
She returned to me so fast.
As, once again, her hand reached out
To touch me…for some cash!
