Every Waking Hour

She needs so much attention;
She requires so much care.
The infant’s cries and teary eyes
Demand that we be there.

“It’s feeding time!” “It’s burping time!”
“Let’s change her for she’s sour!”
We wipe her nose and change her clothes
Through every waking hour.

But still each cry alerts us,
And calls us to our feet;
For never has a full-time task
Had fruits one-half as sweet.

The magic of a child’s smile
Is like no other power;
As she sleeps in bed we look ahead
To every waking hour.
