holding fast

At times I’m a leader with a vision my own;
At times I simply follow the ranks.
There are times I’m so cheerful the world is my throne;
At times I’m just the king of the cranks.

At times I can be the most benevolent guy,
At times I pick a person apart.
There are times I’ve been the reason for a loved one to cry;
At times I’ve truly gladdened the heart.

So, standing at the mirror, looking into my eyes
Which is the reflection I see?
Through the years I have shown to be a number of guys,
Which am I destined to be?

I turn to a wisdom greater far than my own,
Plead the prophets, both present and past:
“Never despair of the winds that have blown,
Though you slip, there’s still a way to hold fast.

“As an anchor can steady the mightiest ship
When, alone, it would have gone with the tide,
We’ve an anchor which requires more than words from the lips;
It takes a will that must be branded inside.

“God’s words have been given to hold us secure,
For no one is perfect, save one…
And the rest are not judged by what they once were,
But, rather, by what they’ve become.”
