If We Knew Now What We Knew Then

There is a “mind-collective”; a vat of human thought;
Where attitudes, opinions, views of all mankind are caught.
In democratic fashion this Mind of Man evolves
As one thought gains a quorum, the former view dissolves.

Thus, what Man judges proper, acceptable, or true
Depends on which ingredient has over-powered the stew.
Thus, each regeneration redefines the rules,
And brands past incarnations as folly of old fools.

Yet each past manifestation contained one truth the same
Which now, unprecedented, has fallen into shame:
Acknowledgement that some great power does, in the end, define
The way things are in verity, that there is truth divine!

No, unaware that current truths will meet tomorrow’s scorn,
We celebrate what we create though it is near-stillborn.
So short-lived have “facts” become that no one ever knows
If values born just this morn were just this eve’ disposed.

Our faith’s misplaced; we stand disgraced by knowledge we have spurned;
For ages Man has seen the light of truths that we’ve unlearned.
Our science, our humanities, would find new life again;
How rich we’d be if we knew now the things that we knew then!
