my son

I collapse at home, my day’s work done,
I raise my eyes to see
A boy ’bout two with eyes of blue
Who looks a lot like me.

He’s got my hat up on his head,
‘Comes down around his cheeks;
‘Been trying to tell me something now,
‘Been doing this for weeks!

He wears my boots, he works my tools,
He’s watching all the time;
He parrots all I say and do
Like a three foot Daddy-mime.

He tries so hard, he wants to please,
He desires just to grow;
He reminds me of important truths
A grown-up dad should know.

‘Bout faith and dreams, an earnest heart;
A simple will to try;
A hope to always stand approved
By a Father up on high.

My son would laugh if he just knew,
As he repeats my every whim,
That while he’s trying to be like Dad,
Dad’s trying to be like him.
