Not The President

Nothing halts my progress;
No one slows me down
As thousands wait before me
On my appointed rounds.

The doctors and the lawyers,
Despite what they may earn,
Check their dates and mark the time
When I will then return.

They gather up their offerings,
And package them with care;
And pray that I will not reject
The items they prepare.

I am not the President,
Nor ar-is-toc-ra-cy;
But all the nation pitches in
To meet my going fee.

I’m flippant, gruff, and sassy,
But they all understand,
They take my service trashy,
‘Cause I’m the garbageman.
