The Birth of the Relief Society

The Relief Society is the world’s largest women’s organization by total membership and is a key service organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).

The nights were still frozen, his cabin was chilled,
To the window went Joseph and leaned on the sill;
Tonight he was restless and, though he wanted to sleep,
He stood in the darkness, his thoughts reaching deep.

He was one who’d seen visions, he’d been to the veil,
He had translated scriptures, received them as well;
Angelic instructors had guided his hand
In restoring the church to original plan.

He established the quorums, called bishops and clerks;
Organized missions and directed their works.
Precept by precept the church was restored;
It came line upon line direct from the Lord.

But tonight came a feeling, ‘came deep to his soul,
He stirred up the fire and added some coal;
He looked at his Emma and thought of the saints,
How they bore so much sorrow with so few complaints.

He thought of the sisters, their virtuous ways,
Their benevolent nature through turbulent days;
Their strengths and their courage, their comfort so sweet;
The feeling came stronger, “The frame’s not complete!”

The church frames the kingdom of God on the earth,
It builds up His children, revealing their worth;
And the sisters are needed to work in His plan,
To nourish the nations, to learn and expand.

He thought how each sister has her own special touch,
And, if bonded together, they’d accomplish so much.
The thought was exciting! His bosom now burned!
The time had arrived for the key to be turned.

United the sister together will stand
In blessing His children as the Savior had planned.
But with Emma enjoying her well-deserved sleep,
Joseph’s excitement would just have to keep;

Still, he called her to action the very next morn
And, with the sisters united, what power was born.
