The Fence

A rough split-rail fence divides the land
The wild and rugged to the left
The cultivated and tame to the right.
The fence draws the line.

But only for man.
Deer bounce unbothered
Raccoons and rabbits keep measured pace; over, under, or through.
Chipmunks are grateful for the racetrack of rails
A rodent autobahn.

Trees uprooted, then sawn, then replanted
For demarcation: “This place” is different from “That”.
The kingdom defines the man
And a fence describes the kingdom.
