The Thought That Counts

Again and again as we walk among men
An occasion to serve may arise;
Some spirit to lift with a word or a gift
That would bring back a light to their eyes.

We give it some thought and know that we ought,
But, passing the chance, we pronounce,
“Our intentions are good, we would if we could,
Besides, it’s the thought that counts!”

But when a need’s noted by a friend who’s devoted
To serve when occasion requires,
Without thinking twice, for thoughts won’t suffice,
They’re doing a deed that inspires.

Lone thoughts have no power to sweeten the sour,
Nor to lighten a burden one ounce;
But when we think, “DO IT!” and apply ourselves to it
Then we find the thought that counts.
