They Quickly Looked Away

The boy sat alone while, across the aisle,
A girl sat blushing at his smile.
Their eyes would meet, then dance apart;
Because of fear inside their hearts
They quickly looked away.

The beggar limped across the street,
With tattered coat and ragged feet.
A rich man who was walking by
Glanced that beggar in the eye
And quickly looked away.

The pilot taxied toward the strip;
He scanned his charts and planned his trip.
The gauge was in the danger zone,
But, in a hurry toward his home,
He quickly looked away.

The boy and girl stayed lonely;
The beggar soon had died;
They finally found the pilot’s plane
Against a mountainside.

How often times it happens,
We look to the past and say;
“I wonder how it might have been
Had I not looked away.”
