To Those Now Taking The Field

A couple decades ‘come and gone
Since last we took the field;
Athletes chasing glory’s crown,
Determined not to yield.

And we were skilled, and swift, and strong;
‘Set records in our day;
And in our school’s proud trophy case
Our photos fade away.

Today I come to cheer them on,
To whom the torch was passed;
I marvel at the strength they have;
Amazed! Were we that fast?

They’re better trained; they’re prepped and fit
Like none I can recall;
They’re young and bright and it’s alright
To watch our records fall.

A couple decades ‘come and gone
Since we were in the field;
Elders sent to save the world,
His truth our sword and shield.

And we did well; we made our mark;
Triumphant in our day –
But as I view His soldiers new
Again, I’m blown away…

The bar is raised, and to this height
The fittest e’er to rise
Match that mark and come intent
To push it through the skies.

And all who’ve walked that field before
Now cheer, sincerely pleased;
For nothing past compares with what
The Lord will do with these.
