What Will We Do, You And I?

I tuck the covers tight around your bed
And, leaving just the night-light on,
At the doorway of you room I pause to look ahead
At the day that rises with the dawn.

I wonder at a thousand things, as life unfolds
And you begin to grow and years go by,
That fathers do with sons to build a bond that holds;
Oh, what will we do, you and I?

Will sports become a passion that we both pursue,
With disappointment balancing the thrills?
Will a ride across the country keep me close to you
As we motor through the valleys and the hills?

Will we talk of things eternal and conviction build?
May the things we do result in the reply;
We drank of life together and were always filled
From the things that we have done, you and I.
